Ken Read and Son extends product range

17th November 2008

This autumn Ken Read and Son have extended their range with the introduction of several new products for use in meat processing.

In addition to Regular Chicken and Turkey Ground Meat (often referred to as "baader" meat), the company is now producing "Fat Reduced" versions of both 3mm products. These have a fat content of 12% as opposed to the regular 17%. This allows them to count fully towards meat content in recipies as they fall well within the maximum fat threshold for poultrymeat ingredients according to EU regulations. These products also have a lower calcium content due to new processing techniques.

Commenting, Commercial Manager Willie Gordon explained " In the face of global recession most meat products producers are under intense pressure to reduce recipe costs. These new products represent excellent value for money. As well as good functionality, they also count toward meat content in recipe declarations. I would urge buyers in western europe, who perhaps do not use separated meat ingredients at present, to give these products serious consideration.

It could be, because Ken Read and Son have struck oil - but its not Brent crude.  Its poultry oil and they hope that production will soon grow to 100 barrels per day - or over 5000 tonnes per year.
This development is part of a new business strategy to transform the fortunes of the company and reduce its dependence on trade with third countries - which has become increasingly volatile in recent years.
The oil is extracted from human food grade chicken and turkey raw materials and is extremely low in free fatty acids - the key quality  measurement in the oils and fats industry. Due to this, it can be used as an ingredient in human food as well as petfood.
The ability to produce low fat poultry protein products, also derived from the process, will make the company unique in the UK. It is believed that these will find bespoke applications with EU based meat processors.
The process is also positive news for UK poultry producers who will now be able to sell raw materials for human food, rather than see these devalued as petfood ingredients.
Commenting on this exciting development for the company, Chairman Ken Read said,
"It is particularly encouraging that this project has been completed in a year which has been one of the most challenging in the history of the company. The export restrictions outwith the EU - a consequence of the avian influenza outbreak in Suffolk in February, has forced the business to be more inventive and produce new products which can be sold into a less volatile market-place".
The project represents an investment of over £1 million (€1.45 million)
